KUANTAN, Sept 8 — Pahang told its civil servants today they risk disciplinary action if they join anti-Lynas protests.

The last six months has seen a growing level of opposition of civil society groups, opposition politicians and residents over the impending rare earth plant in Gebeng, near Kuantan belonging to Lynas, an Australian miner.

The state employees can forward their views on the matter to their department heads however, State Secretary Datuk Seri Muhammad Safian Ismail was quoted saying by Bernama Online. He said that they can even forward their views to him directly.

Muhammad Safian felt 15 per cent of them are influenced by propaganda against the plant, with some pasting “Stop Lynas” stickers on their vehicles.

He said that the civil servants are misinformed by certain factions of the actual situation, therefore they will get more briefings from time to time from their head of department who have better and more accurate information.

A nine-man International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) panel has reviewed with the plant and said the plant will be safe if it complied with its recommendation for the RM700 million plant.
