PETALING JAYA: People should stay indoors as much as possible and avoid going to areas where the haze reading is particularly bad.

“Be sure to drink a lot of water to stay hydrated as well,” Deputy Health Minister Datuk Rosnah Shirlin said.

She said the ministry was constantly monitoring the situation.

She also called on everyone to stop open burning as it would contribute to the worsening haze situation, adding that there were still some cases of open burning.

“It is detrimental not just to your health, but your family’s and people around you,” she said.

Consultant respiratory physician Dr Daniel Lee Keat Chye said his patients had more than doubled in the past few days.

He said those with pre-existing conditions such as asthma and chronic bronchitis would be especially affected by the haze.

There was also an increase in new patients who reported feeling breathless, he said.

“The haze causes bronchospasm, a condition in which their airways temporarily shut down,” he said.

Dr Lee advised the public to stay indoors and get an air purifier for their homes if possible.
