MIRI: Sarawakians can start claiming from a cash-rebate project initiated by Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry that reward consumers who buy energy-efficient refrigerators, air conditioners and chillers.

The SAVE (Sustainability Achieved Via Energy-Efficiency) project, launched in Peninsular Malaysia three days ago, also covered Sarawak and Sabah, its Minister Datuk Seri Peter Chin announced here yesterday.

Chin, who is Miri MP, said the SAVE project was a move initiated by the Government to try to save at least RM5.1bil in electricity consumption by 2020, hence increasing the gross national income by that amount.

According to him, the amount saved is equivalent to extra electricity supply for 425,000 homes every year. Malaysians on average use up 34% more energy compared to its Asian neighbours. This SAVE rebate project is the first step towards educating and inculcating a sense of energy efficiency among Malaysians.

“It is part of the Government’s Transformation Plan to improve energy efficiency in the countr,” Chin told a press conference here before receiving a delegation of Guang Ming Clan Association members from China, here for a gathering with their Miri counterparts.

According to Chin, three electricity providers in the country are supporting the initiative, namely, Tenaga Nasional Bhd (for peninsula states), Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (for Sabah) and Sesco Bhd (for Sarawak).

He said under the SAVE project, the Government had allocated RM50mil to be used to pay rebates to consumers who met the necessary criteria in their purchase of air-cond units, refrigerators and chillers.

The amount of rebates given out are for refrigerator (RM 200 per unit), air-cond (RM 100 per unit) and chiller (RM 200 per unit).

For the refrigerator, models with maximum capacity of 400 litres are eligible. For air-cond, the models with maximum 2.5 horsepower are eligible while for the chiller, the models must be only those for commercial buildings (like shopping complexes).

To qualify for the rebates for refrigerator and aircond, consumers must buy from the 12 well-known brands that are participating in the SAVE project, while for the chiller, there are seven brands participating. Consumers in Sarawak who want to know whether they are eligible for the rebates can visit the nearest Sesco office and seek further information from the officers about the SAVE project.

Those consumers who have access to Internet can check their eligibility and print out their rebate vouchers from the special website set up by the ministry for the SAVE project at http://www.saveenergy.gov.my

Those who qualify for the rebates will have to print the vouchers from the website or get them from Sesco office and claim the rebates from retailers who are participating in the SAVE project.

The list of participating retailers and the energy efficient models are also available on the website or with Sesco offices.

Consumers must start applying for their rebates fast as the project is on a first come, first served basis.

There are rebates available for up to 100,000 units of refrigerators, 65,000 units of air-cond and 72,000 units of chillers.
