KUCHING, June 29 (Bernama) — Sarawak Hidro Sdn Bhd, the owner and developer of Bakun Dam, is expected to sell its first 300 megawatt of power produced to Syarikat Sesco Bhd on Aug 6 this year.

Second Minister for Planning and Resource Management, Datuk Awang Tengah Ali Hassan, said Sarawak Hidro was expected to start the reliability run on Friday, which would take one month and has to be completed before the start of commercial operation.

“At this stage, almost all of the system tests have been completed except for the reliability run.

“Under the power purchase agreement between Sarawak Hidro and Sesco, the milestone for unit completion of the first unit for its commercial operation commencement is Aug 6 this year,” he said in a statement today.

On June 1, the federal government, through Sarawak Hidro, signed a power purchase agreement with Sesco, the utility arm of Sarawak, to sell electricity from Bakun dam to the latter at 6.25 sen per kilowatt hour with an annual increase of 1.5 per cent.

Sarawak Hidro is a unit of Ministry of Finance Inc and owner of the Bakun dam while Sesco is a wholly-owned unit of Sarawak Energy Bhd.

The 2,400MW Bakun Dam’s first of eight turbines is expected to commercially produce its first 300MW in August.

This will be followed by subsequent turbines at three-month intervals until all turbines are in operation in 2013.
