The Star- PETALING JAYA: People in most states in Peninsular Malaysia can expect better solid waste disposal and cleaning of public areas without having to pay extra.

Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Chor Chee Heung said the Cabinet approved yesterday the implementation of the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Functions Act effective Sept 1. The states of Selangor, Perak and Penang are not included.

With the move, all three companies handling the services Alam Flora, Southern Waste Management and E-Idaman would be paid to do a good job.

Besides payment from the local authorities, Chor said the companies would also receive between RM500mil and RM600mil a year from the Federal Government.

“With the subsidy from the Federal Government, houseowners will only have to pay their assessment,” he said in an interview yesterday.

Chor said the companies had not been doing a good job.

One of the reasons was because local authorities had not been paying them enough.

With the implementation of the Act, Chor said the companies must perform their tasks as prescribed under the key performance indicators set by the government.

He said a body to oversee the performance of the companies would be set up offices at the city, town and district levels.

On why the three states were excluded, Chor said Penang was not interested, Perak was quite interested while Selangor wanted to do the service itself.
