THE Malaysian Natural Resources and Environment Ministry yesterday advised the people to avoid open burning during the anticipated hot and dry season between June and September to prevent haze.

It said in a statement that there would be a rise in the incidence of open burning during the period.

“The southwest monsoon will bring hot and dry weather between June and September. As such, it is advisable to avoid open burning because it will be difficult to control and extinguish peat soil fires,” it said.

The ministry said that as a precautionary measure, it had taken the initiative to set up a national haze committee which held a meeting yesterday.

The committee has representatives from various government agencies closely linked to management of a haze disaster, including the Department of Environment, the Sarawak Natural Resources and Environment Board, the Sabah Department of Environmental Protection, and the Meteorological Department of Malaysia.
