KUANTAN: The authorities must consult more experts for further input on the Lynas rare earth refinery in Gebeng, Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh said.

She claimed that statements from Lynas Malaysia Sdn Bhd about lanthanide ore coming from Mount Weld in Western Australia contradicted what had been stated in the Australian parliament’s research papers.

“Lynas said their rare earth contains naturally low levels of thorium but the Australian parliament said the main source of thorium in Australia is the mineral monazite, which contains 8% to 10% of the element. Who do we believe now?” she said when contacted yesterday.

Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) director-general Raja Datuk Abdul Aziz Raja Adnan said in a public briefing last week that the operating licence for Lynas would be revoked if the amount of thorium in the raw material exceeded 0.16%.

Fuziah urged the authorities to look into the matter in greater detail.
