KUANTAN: The Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) plans to set up a branch office in Gebeng here, which is also the site of the controversial rare earth processing plant being built by an Australian company.

State Local Government, Environment and Health Committee chairman Datuk Hoh Khai Mun said the proposed AELB branch office would not only serve industries operating in Gebeng, but also the east coast.

He added that it would be a fitting move to have the office in the area as it would be able to closely monitor activities in the area, especially the Lynas Advanced Material Plant, owned by Lynas Corporation Ltd.

“Of late, there has been anxiety among certain groups as well as residents about the dangers involved in the processing and waste to be produced by the plant.

“By having an AELB branch office here, we hope it will allay fears and guarantee that the plant’s operations will be safe,” Hoh said here yesterday.

He cited a similar experience the state government had gone through over the construction of a major paper and pulp mill in Temerloh as the public feared that it would pollute Sungai Pahang.
