BENTONG: The tunnel to supply raw water from Pahang to Selangor, that is under construction, is 70% completed, well ahead of its scheduled finish in 2014.

This, Pahang Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob said, clearly showed that the Pahang government had put the interest of the people of Selangor as its priority despite the two states political differences.

He said it was the plan of the Barisan Nasional government to ensure that Selangor got uninterrupted supply of raw water.

He said once the project would supply raw water from Sungai Semantan in Pahang to Hulu Langat in Selangor.

“The water supply will go through a tunnel measuring 5.2m for its centre line over a distance of 44.6km.

“It can supply 1,890 million litres of water per day for the people in Selangor, Federal Territory and Putrajaya,” he said.

Adnan said this after he officiated the resettlement of orang asli in Kampung Sungai Bilut here yesterday and presented keys to houses to them.

The 110 orang asli families were moved from Sungai Temir in Raub as their land would be submerged by water once the tunnel was in operation.

Adnan said the affected orang asli community was provided with a bungalow-type house for each family and their main source of income would be from the 2ha palm oil plantation and 0.4ha of land for their fruits farms.

“There are certain quarters from the Opposition who have politicised the issue claiming that the affected orang asli had been neglected because the Government had taken their land in Sungai Temir for the tunnel project.

“As we all can see here, today, we have moved them out from Sungai Temir, to make way for the tunnel project. However, we have placed them in a better settlement equipped with better basic infrastructure, public amenities and so on,” Adnan said.
