SHOPPERS who display environmentally-friendly behaviour will be ‘rewarded’ for setting a good example for others to embrace the state government’s Cleaner, Greener Penang campaign.

Seberang Prai Municipal Council Local Agenda 21 (LA 21) coordinator Chew Eng Seng said “green shoppers” would receive non-woven eco-friendly bags, food containers and composting bins for doing their bit to protect the environment.

He said volunteers, known as ‘green scouts’ would soon go around selected shopping centres in Seberang Prai on specific days to pick out the recipients and reward them.

He said the council together with the Central Seberang Prai Environment Resource Centre and CIMB Foundation would jointly hold promotional campaigns called Community Link Projects in eight shopping centres from Jan 29 until June 5.

“During the campaign, our green scouts, who comprise students and members from eight Rukun Tetangga and two residents associations in central Seberang Prai district, will identify shoppers who display environmentally-conscious behaviour and present them vouchers to redeem gifts from us,” he said during a briefing for volunteers at the centre in Taman Desa Damai yesterday.

Centre chairman Ng Tho Heng said those who brought their own shopping bags, food containers or tiffin carriers to the shopping centres or even those who dispose of waste in the proper manner would be rewarded.

He said children below 15 years old would be entitled to take part in an environmental quiz, while CIMB credit card holders were entitled to an extra gift.

“The campaign is in line with the state’s No Free Plastic Bags policy and we want to reward those who display good environmental behaviour,” he said.

Ng said Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng would open the campaign’s pilot programme in Megamal Pinang, Prai, on Jan 29.

He said a similar programme would be held at Megamal Pinang on Jan 30, Sunway Carnival Mall Seberang Jaya (Feb 26 and Feb 27), Econsave Raja Uda (March 5 and March 6), Krico Superstore Bukit Minyak (March 12 and March 13), Econsave Sungai Bakap (April 16 and April 17), Tesco Alma (April 30 and May 1), Billion Kota Permai (May 28 and May 29) and Aeon Seberang Prai City (June 4 and June 5).

Jalan Stesen CIMB Bank branch manager Koh Seak Chin said the bank’s subsidiary, CIMB Foundation, was sponsoring RM400,000 for the campaign as it supported the move to promote greater environmental awareness among the people.
