If you live within the George Town Heritage Zone and plan to do some spring-cleaning before Chinese New Year, you can take part in the state government’s large-scale spring-cleaning exercise on Jan 9.

More than 500 volunteers had been recruited to participate in the spring-cleaning activities within the heritage zone between 9am and noon on that day.

Local government and traffic management committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said the activities planned include cleaning up the streets and public areas, collection of recyclable items from all businesses and houses in the zone and planting more trees.

“We hope all businesses and residents will cooperate to clean up their own premises and on that day, they can bring out their unwanted items from old furniture to electronic items and our volunteers will collect all these to be sent for recycling,” he said.

Those with unwanted electronic items to be recycled may bring them to the Penang Chinese Town Hall to be disposed of.

There will also be free health screening at the Penang Chinese Town Hall on that day.
