KUCHING: The Federal Govern-ment should give preference to Sarawak’s bid for the Bakun Dam over other bidders.

Second Planning and Resource Management Minister Awang Tengah Ali Hassan said the state needed power from the dam to ensure a reliable supply for the early industries opening in the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) area.

“I hope the Federal Government will consider our bid, not just in terms of profits, but also for the overall benefit to the nation.

“After all, the purpose of having Bakun Dam is to bring up the process of individualisation in SCORE,” he said when asked how important was the dam’s power for Sarawak and the offers by other bidders overseas.

Asked if Sarawak would buy the power from Bakun Dam if it was sold to other companies, Awang Tengah said: “It will be better if it’s within our control in terms of planning and so on.”

The overall cost of Bakun was officially put at RM7.3bil but due to cost overruns, compensation for delays and interest, the final cost is said to have escalated. Sarawak is willing to raise its bid to RM7bil from RM6bil earlier.
