Penang to impose surcharge on excessive water usage

-The Star- GEORGE TOWN: Starting Nov 1, the state government will impose a surcharge of 24 sen per 1,000 litres on domestic comsumers who use more than 35,000 litres of water per month.

The move is expected to affect 30% of domestic users who have been identified as wasting water in excess of 35,000 litres, which is the average monthly usage per household in the state.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said that the Water Conservation Surcharge (WCS) was being imposed to curb water wastage in the state.

“This allowance of 35,000 litres will help to reduce our daily water consumption from 286 litres per day to 233 litres per day,” he said.

Lim told a press conference here Wednesday that Penang was the first state in the country to impose the surcharge to motivate the people to reduce water usage and wastage.
