-The Star- MALACCA: Prolonged and unusually heavy rain early yesterday morning caused massive flash floods in several parts here and in Johor Baru.

The Malacca Meterological De-partment recorded 83mm of rain after six hours of continuous rain that started at about 3am, compared to the daily average of 20mm.

Some 13 locations were affected by flash floods with waters rising up to almost a metre in low lying areas. Among the worst hit areas were Paya Ikan, Kampung Pulau Kelapa, Taman Bendahara, Banda Hilir Flats, Parit Cina, Taman Harta Pertama, Taman Mewah, Jalan Melaka Baru and Taman Mas Merah.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam, who visited the flood-hit areas, said steps were being taken to alleviate the flash flood problem affecting the city.

“Eighty per cent of the flood mitigation projects have been completed,” he said.
